The Osborne 1 is the first commercially successful portable computer, released in 1981 by Osborne Computer Corporation for US$1,795. It is about the size and weight of a period sewing machine (weighing 11.1 kg and measuring 52x23x33 cm), and runs a CP/M 2.2 OS. It is powered from mains and has no on-board battery (though it does have a DC input connector for an external battery), but is still classed as a portable device since it can be hand-carried when the keyboard is closed. The computer was based on the Xerox NoteTaker, a prototype developed at Xerox PARC in 1976 by Alan Kay.
