It was also the first major console produced by an American company since the release of the Atari Jaguar in 1993. Whereas most games consoles to that point were built from custom hardware components, the Xbox was built around standard PC components, using a modified version of the Windows 2000 OS, and featuring a 733 MHz Intel Pentium III CPU, a 233 MHz Nvidia GeForce 3-based NV2A GPU, a built-in HDD, and integrated Ethernet, making the Xbox technically more powerful compared to its rivals.

It featured an online service, Xbox Live, and several peripherals, including wireless controllers, expanded storage, and the Kinect motion sensing camera. Early versions of the console suffered from a high failure rate, indicated by the so-called “Red Ring of Death”, necessitating an extension of the device’s warranty period. Microsoft released two redesigned models of the console: the Xbox 360 S in 2010, and the Xbox 360 E in 2013.

It is the first Xbox game console to be released in China, specifically in the Shanghai Free-Trade Zone. Microsoft marketed the device as an “all-in-one entertainment system”, hence the name “Xbox One”. An eighth-generation console, it mainly competed against Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Nintendo’s Wii U and later the Switch.
